Barn Hunt Trial - Inola, OK (Jan 2021)

On a spur of the moment feeling, we entered Myst into a Barn Hunt trial down in Oklahoma for two trials on Sunday only as that was all that was left open. This meant we had a long round trip adventure to a new place for a few minutes in the ring… as is par for the course. HOWEVER, Myst did a phenomenal job proving she is a natural at this! Needing only 1 qualifying score to earn her her next title (Barn Hunt Open - RATO) she managed to not only achieve that on her first run but she also took High In Class “HIC” meaning she was the quickest to accomplish a successful run. For her second run, there was no option to move up to the next level so we ran in the “B-class” which means you compete towards a different title but we likely won’t pursuit that far but our entry fees were already paid. None the less, that did not stop her from coming out of the gate fast and earning a second HIT for the day! She is a natural at this and it’s so exciting to watch her work! I am so grateful for such an amazing foundation bitch for our program! Here she is in all her glory: the left photo is her HIC-A ribbon and her new title ribbon and the right photo is her HIC-B ribbon! She is only the 12th Corso to EVER earn a RATO title… and we aren’t done! :)

Titles earned through the end of 2020

With COVID cases increasing dramatically, a litter of pups on the ground, and a full schedule of dog sports still on the list we didn’t do a great job of updating the last few months of 2020. As such, I am going to put a quick summary of the titles earned by Myst, Grizz, and Sunny to finish out the end of last year.

In October, Grizz and Sunny both earned Rally Intermediate titles through the virtual rally program currently being offered by AKC in lieu of in person events at this time.

In November things picked up after the litter of pups went onto their new homes. Grizz and Myst traveled up to Omaha and tried their hand at Barn Hunt for the first time. Both of them earned their Barn Hunt Instinct titles quickly out of the gate. Myst then went on to earn a few legs towards her BH Novice title before traveling to Colorado where she qualified for her final leg and earned her Barn Hunt Novice title. Then mid-month, Grizz, Sunny, and Myst all earned their Trick Dog Intermediate titles virtually. To finish out November, Myst additionally earned her CGC Advanced and CGC Urban temperament titles.

We decided to take the month of December off to spend some time together as a family. We are going to start focusing on some higher level titles in a few sports with Grizz and Myst… and maybe a few new sports. We are also going to start training up our keeper puppy, Thundyr, for her entrance into the world of sports.

Temperament Tests - KCK & Castle Rock, CO

This has been a busy a busy week of tying up some loose ends at PHCC. On Labor Day, we headed out to the local outdoor mall in Kansas City, KS to attempt Canine Good Citizen tests for both Sunny & Grizz. We tested the original Canine Good Citizen (CGC) as well as the upper level Advanced CGC (CGCA) and Urban CGC (CGCU) titles. Grizz and Sunny passed all 3 successfully! YAY CONGRATS! This is something we have been meaning to do for awhile just never took the time to stop and get it done! Thankfully, COVID has given us that time :)

Secondly, this past weekend Grizz and I headed out to Colorado to test for the AKC Temperament Test (ATT). It requires two passing scores by two different judges that assess reactivity and confidence through a series of auditory, visual, tactile, motion, and social interactions. Grizz not only passed with nearly perfect scores, he impressed quite a few people and won them over with his sweet but serious demeanor!

Sunny is now officially known as:

Grizz is now officially known as:

Rally Novice Title: COVID-19 Edition

The last trial we had prior to COVID-19 hitting was a Rally trial up in Iowa. Both Grizz and Myst were entered to earn their third and final leg for their Rally Novice (RN) titles. Unfortunately, just days prior to the event Myst came into heat and therefore could not compete. Grizz went on to win first in his class and finish his title. Due to all dog events being shut down we have been unable to earn Myst’s last leg… until this week. With the adaption of virtual Rally Novice courses, we were able to video a performance at home and earn Myst her final leg! She did excellent and finished with a high score! We are very proud of her, especially considering she was also 5 weeks pregnant!

Stay tuned for more exciting news coming soon! ;)

Trick Dog Titles - part 2: of COVID-19 Quarantine

Super happy to announce that both Kenai and Rayne were also both able to add Trick Dog Novice to their names last week! And even more excitedly, our two co-own dogs with Overwatch Kennels (Jazzy & Ember) both earned their Trick Dog Novice titles too! I am a bit delayed in updating as my full-time job (working in an Emergency Department) has been understandably busy this past week! Hope everyone is staying put and staying safe, we will get through these crazy times.

Trick Dog Titles: COVID-19 Quarantine

Due to the COVID-19 quarantine period, nearly all AKC events and shows have been suspended for the foreseeable future. We had planned to earn a number of new titles this spring including trying our first attempts at Barn Hunt, finishing Myst’s rally novice, earning some more advanced rally legs with Grizz & Myst, starting our scent work adventures with Sunny, and earning some more CAT & FastCAT legs. With all of those cancelled, we suddenly have a lot of free time for home improvement projects and basic training opportunities. One thing that came up this week was the opportunity to submit Trick Dog routines via video submission to qualified evaluators. We have never really given much thought to these as they weren’t high on my interest list, but with nothing else to do and having an opportunity to work on dog training I thought “why not?”

This weekend we started off strong with a variety of new tricks on the horizon. It’s no surprise Myst and Grizz jumped wholeheartedly into the adventure as they already love working. Sunny hasn’t had a lot of opportunity for other training yet but she too was incredibly enthusiastic to learn new things! Now we are working on the less willing participants: Kenai (who thinks he should just sleep on the couch all day) and Rayne (who has a bit of ADHD). So for now, we present our 3 superstars earning the Trick Dog Novice titles already this week: Sunny, Myst, & Grizz! We will see what else unfolds during these unusual times.

Conformation Show - St. Joseph, MO 2/2020

This weekend was a fun and exciting weekend for PHCC! We went out to support our dear friend Maria in handling two of our co-own bitches: Jazzy (PhogHaven’s Promised Genesis dei Overwatch) & Ember (Ivy League’s Wynds of Change). Both girls won Best of Opposite Sex for their first points this weekend and we are so very proud of them. Additionally, Maria took both girls to do Canine Good Citizen (CGC) testing and they both passed with flying colors!

Secondly, on a whim, we decided to pull Eli (PhogHaven’s Eli Lucius) off his couch and into the show ring to warm him up and learn what we need to practice on with him. Eli was placed in a co-own home where he is essentially raised as a companion dog with their family but where we all agree up front to allow us to show him and keep him intact for breeding. This allows us to give our pups the best life possible and still grow our program without having a kennel full of dogs living here. We couldn't be more thankful for those families who work with us to accomplish this, and Eli’s family is no exception! They have done a wonderful job keeping him in shape, well socialized, and nicely trained! This was a first time experience pulling him back to show and it went better than we could have hoped for as Eli took Best of Breed (BOB) both days for his first show! Thank you for all the hard work his family has put in and continues to put in with him <3

FastCATs & Rally - Greeley, CO 10/2019

We took a short excursion to Greeley, CO to participate in some FastCAT and Rally competitions. On Saturday, Grizz completed two qualifying runs at FastCATs, clocking in at a swift 24 mph, while Myst ran her first qualifying FastCAT and her first qualifying leg of Rally Novice. Unfortunately, some bad weather blew in overnight and the majority of Sunday’s activities were snowed out so we headed home early!
